Our 3 Favorite Baby Monitors

We discussed safety as a topic in our last post on the best baby gates. Today we are going to look at another important accessory that is going to help you keep a watch on your baby. This tech accessory has evolved over the years. It now offers many features that would have been considered magical just a few decades ago. We are of course talking about baby monitors. Their ubiquity has given peace of mind to families all around the world.

Baby monitors used to be audio-only affairs just a couple of decades ago. That was before the internet and technology as a whole really took off. They had limited range and weren’t as reliable. Now, due to the explosion of electronics, you can watch a video feed of your baby from anywhere within the house. The benefits are enormous. We are truly living in wonderful times. It gives us a sense of calm knowing that we can take care of our own children in a way that our parents or any of the generations before never could.

A word on security

Before we begin with this list we want to inform you about a very important thing to keep in mind. Be very wary of security issues. We have some amount of experience with tech topics on this blog. On this issue, we want to stress very hard on the aspect of network security. Hackers are being remarkably brave nowadays and won’t think twice about striking you if you are a soft target. We recommend that you do not purchase baby monitors that require you to connect to your home Wifi or require you to use an app on your phone. That is just a disaster waiting to happen, in our opinion.

All the options that we have selected for you today are self-contained. They form a closed loop that doesn’t require external hardware. These baby monitors can’t be hacked by external parties because they don’t connect to any networks. So, the only way someone can spy on the signal is if they get their hands on the hardware itself which is very unlikely. That is the only level of security that we are comfortable with when it comes to our young one. We ask that you do the same.

So with that word of caution, let us jump into our list of the best baby monitors on Amazon that can help you keep a watchful eye on your loved one. We are going to arrange this list by the simplest and most affordable ones at the top and the ones with the most bells and whistles at the bottom.

VTech DM111 Audio Baby Monitor

This is the simple humble audio monitor that has a great 1000 feet of range. This one uses DECT 6.0 technology to provide crystal clear transmission, eliminating the annoying white noise you hear from analog monitors. The signal is secure and encrypted.

There is also a 5-level sound indicator that is essentially a few graphic bars on the parent unit that indicate the level of sound in your baby’s room. It gives you a way to visually monitor the noise level with the unit muted. Even if you can’t afford the baby monitors with video further down this list, this one should be within anyone’s reach. There are other cool features like a belt clip to attach it to yourself to keep your hands free, an indicator light and beeping tones to alert the parents about the signal quality. You can get this one in two colors and can get it with a single parent module or a double parent module.

GoodBaby Video Baby Monitor with Camera and Audio

This is not the least expensive baby monitor with video on Amazon. However, it has enough additional features to be worth that small extra amount that you pay for this one. It has a 2.4 inch LCD screen. The baby monitor also has other useful features like clear infrared night vision for monitoring rooms at night and room temperature monitoring to ensure your baby’s room is warm or cool enough. It has a range of up to 900 ft maximum which will be enough for most homes.

You can connect up to 4 extra video cameras to get a room from all angles. You can also get an additional parent module. There is also an alarm that can be used as a feeding timer. It even has an audio-only mode and a two-way talk feature to sing lullabies to your baby while you do your chores.

Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor

If money isn’t an issue then we definitely recommend this one. It has all the features that you could possibly ask for in a device like this. It even won an award from Popular Mechanics as being the Best Baby Monitor in 2018. This baby monitor has camera features such as panning, tilting, zooming, and an interchangeable lens. You can swap out the main lens for a zoom lens to see closer. You can zoom out with the wide-angle lens. That is an amazing functionality that lets you cover every corner of your baby’s room. It is expandable up to 4 cameras, has an alarm function, two-way talk, and a remote thermometer. The video and audio are transmitted via a secure 2.4GHz channel with FHSS technology.

So that was our list of the best baby monitors that we believe will give you the best set of features to watch over your young angel. These baby monitors are going to be handy when you want to be busy in another room. These ones will be the right fit if you can’t bear risking leaving your kids alone for even a moment. If you are still debating whether to get one, think of it this way. If you manage to save them from hurting themselves just once and save a trip to the doctor’s office, all of these are going to be worth the money. So look at them as an investment that will pay for itself over time. Highly recommended for all new parents!

Love,

Scooch and Steve
