When you book an Airbnb you expect the space to be unique and full of decorations and more than just a sterile cookie-cutter living space used by thousands of people before you. You are paying for the experience of being in a lived-in home. A lot of Airbnb hosts try very hard to give their guests the amenities they need but they overlook the simple often inexpensive task of giving the place some character.
The property should feel an extension of the host’s character. It is very easy to achieve that on a budget with these wall decorations. They give the guests something to look at when their eyes are wandering about the new space. What to look for in a decor item?
These are random items that we find super interesting. They don’t really have any purpose. They are just here to look good and be a talking point. Maybe the guests will get some ideas for themselves once they visit your property.
Try to get something that is low or no maintenance. Something that is hard to clean will have dust buildup that might cause allergies. Get something that is easy to wipe off once in a while and you are done. Plants are a good idea if you generally have responsible guests who might water them once in a while. If not, plastic plants can work too.
Be careful not to get a tripping or falling hazard. Get something that can be secured properly to the wall. If the guests hit their head or drop something on their feet, there will be lawsuits to look at.
If you going to get some art, try to keep it pleasant and not too confrontational. It is a good idea to show your character but keep the zanier impulses to yourself.
Make sure the decorations are not political in nature. You will be serving guests from all around the country and world and something political, even if it is not overt, might be a turn off for someone who might disagree with you. Something like a flag or a state cutout is fine. Memorabilia endorsing a political party or a candidate is not.
Keep a mental list of items so that if you miss something you instantly know where to look. Don’t get anything really valuable as a showpiece as you are running a rental at the end of the day.
Also, don’t have your personal pictures in the guest rooms. That is super weird and can be easily overlooked!
Paintings are a good choice. Since they are a general topic, go with your gut and pick something that matches your personality while keeping the previous tips in mind.
