The Top 6 Compostable Plates And Bowl Sets

Continuing on the theme from our previous blog post, we would like to expand on the whole concept of preparing for parties of multiple people while still making eco friendly and sustainable decisions. We looked at cutlery the last time. Now we will look at our favorite compostable plates and bowl sets that you can buy on Amazon to prepare for your numerous guests.

Top things to keep in mind

  1. Since the food is going to be in direct contact with the plates for a long time, the plates and bowls should be resistant to sustained hot temperatures. A good way to check for that is to look for claims of the plates and bowls being restaurant grade or foodservice grade. Those are the kinds of plates and bowls that you can leave the food overnight in the fridge or even microwave in without fear of having any toxic material leak in it.
  2. Another thing to look for is how strong the plates are especially when brought in contact with liquids. If the plate absorbs water or oil and becomes soggy then it is not going to do you any good. Some plates get deep cuts when even simple compostable cutlery is used with them. The reviews are a good place to check for these complaints.
  3. If being gluten-free is a necessity check for plates that mention the same explicitly in their description. We’ve seen a lot of plates using cornstarch in their manufacture. Although the probability of a significant quantity of gluten ending up in your plate is minimal, it is always great to be reassured.

Like we mentioned in the blog post about cutlery items, there is not a tonne of differentiation between the products especially at lower price points. As long as the product meets the important points of sturdiness and eco-friendliness, you are good to purchase them. Hence the deciding factor usually becomes price and design and those two things are of course subjective. So wasting no more time, these are our favorite compostable plates and bowl sets available on Amazon

Earth’s Natural Alternative, Eco-Friendly, Compostable Plant Fiber 6″ Plate

These come in a pack of 50 plates. They are manufactured from unbleached, chlorine-free, pesticide-free, dye-free, and natural discarded wheat stalk and bagasse. The plates are microwave safe and resistant to liquids seeping into an acceptable degree. The plates are claimed to be gluten-free because they are made from plant stalk and not the grain which is the source of gluten. They can stand temperatures up to 200 degree Fahrenheit. The company behind them claims that the plates are compostable in commercial facilities in about 6 months and in a home compost in about a year.

Dtocs Palm Leaf Plates 7 Inch Square (Pack 100)

This 100 pack of palm leaf plates feels really high end. We reckon you will receive a lot of compliments from your friends and family if you serve them food on these stylish plates. The plates have a natural wood color and aroma. They also come in an oval variant that looks just as fancy. The company claims that the plates are made from naturally fallen palm leaves. That is such an interesting method of gathering raw material for your production that we had to include these plates in our list. Since the leaves are naturally shed, no trees are harmed in the creation of these plates. The company puts the plates through UV ray treatment to ensure complete hygiene. The plates are microwave safe.

Compostable Luncheon Plates- Eco-Friendly Natural Bagasse Sugarcane Dinnerware Set

These come in a pack of 100. They are made from bagasse. The company also manufactures 7 inch and 9-inch plates along with 12 oz bowls. The plates are BPI certified. The BPI certification is very important for plates and bowls as it assures you that there is no plastic or wax used in the making of the plates. They are also microwave and freezer safe. The only complaint that we have with these plates is that they are shipped in plastic wrap. Overlooking that small issue, we recommend them.

Earth’s Dreams 100% Compostable 9″ Paper Plates White

These are a pack of 100 made of wheat stalk and sugar cane fibers. These are 9-inch plates that are advertised as heavy duty. They are resistant to liquids and high temperatures. They are BPI certified and can compost within 60 days.

125-Pack 100% Compostable 12 oz. Paper Bowls

These deep 12 oz bowls are picked as Amazon’s Choice for a good reason. They meet the EN13412 compostability standards which means that they can decompose within 3 to 6 months.  The bowls are FDA certified due to being unbleached, plastic-free, and tree-free. The bowls are made to be especially liquid and heat resistant because there is a good chance that they will most likely end up carrying some kind of hot liquid. They are good enough to meet the standards of foodservice.

Paper Bowls [125-Pack] Heavy-Duty Quality Natural Disposable Bagasse

These are made from 100% sugarcane fiber. The bowls meet the ASTM D6400 or D6868 standards. They are not home compostable and will have to be carried to a commercial facility for composting. The bowls are microwave and freezer safe. They are liquid, oil, and cut resistant. They are sturdy enough for our liking.

If you are planning for a party and haven’t bought the cutlery yet, there are a lot of deals where you get bundles of plates, bowls, and cutlery together. They offer good value. This is true especially if it is a one-off event. That way you don’t end up with unused pieces of cutlery. We won’t cover those ones here but you should know that it is an option.

So those were our 6 favorite compostable plates and bowl sets to grab whenever we have a large group of people over at our place. They let us enjoy the company of our friends and family without having to worry about the adverse effects on the environment. The more sustainable we make these events, the more often we will feel free to have them without any feelings of guilt. It is a win-win situation!

Love,

Scooch and Steve
