Our Airbnb Bathroom Remodel
As many of you know we recently acquired our second Tampa Florida based Airbnb property and started our bathroom remodel. When we inspected and purchased the property in the hippest and one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in Florida, Seminole Heights, there was a large dip in the flooring of our new Airbnb’s bathroom. This was a really interesting and compounding problem that both the shower and the toilet worked together to create.
The shower shifted downward causing screws from the shower door to come loose triggering more water to spill out. Because of the shower dipping down and flowing water onto the floor the toilet then started to dip causing more water to spill onto the dip in the floor. Water from both was the “one-two punch” of water damage and we needed to act quickly to address the issue before launching the listing on Airbnb.

Step one was ripping up the floor to see what was going on and replace any old plumbing to make sure our guests have clean water. Once the floor was up our contractor showed us how it could be fixed and gave us a budget.
Step two was to take out the toilet, vanity, and show to replace the surrounding floorboards where the water damage occurred. In addition, we brought in our plumbers to get the plumbing fixed from any issues the previous damage might have caused.
Step three was to re-lay all the tile on the base of the shower. These were purchased in 12×12 parcels and quick to install. A key part of laying shower tile is to make sure the base tile goes UNDER the wall tile. This prevents water from breaking down the grout and separating the wall from the ground tile. As you can see we couldn’t find the exact size of the wall rectangle tiles so we decided to go with the same width and buy longer tiles.
Step four was to install the baseboards, linoleum flooring. For this small space, we did research on the cost of linoleum vs vinyl flooring. Linoleum turned out to be only $100 whereas vinyl would have been $300+ to cover the floor. After the baseboards were installed we had to re-install the vanity, shower “shell,” and the toilet. This is the final step of the bathroom remodel. All that remains is to paint around the toilet as well as the baseboards.
